Portland tattoo artist “Winston the Whale” has come up with a new trend to ink your body: 3D tattoos. The idea came from a client, who asked if he could do a stick ‘n’ poke tattoo (that DIY tattoo technique) in red and blue, resembling a 3D graphic.
He then uploaded a photo of his most recent work to Instagram, where it got immediate attention. Soon, 3D tattoos petitions started flooding in (seems like he’s busy: “Books closed”, the Instagram bio reads).
Calling them 3D tattoos – though catchy – might be a little far-fetched, since they don’t actually offer that 3D visual effect: “they don’t actually work on skin,” Winston the Whale told the Huffington Post. “Unfortunately there are several factors to making an anaglyph image effective and the contour of the body, skin tone, color overlap, etc. that negate the actual anaglyph 3D effect.”
Sadly, even a pair of those fun vintage 3D glasses won’t amp these up. But if you’re not digging the latest tattoo trends like glow-in-the-dark designs or blackout tattoos, this might be the out-of-the-box trend you’re after to make your tattoo stand out.
